WHY GOOD DENTAL HEALTH IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOU THINK

From an early age, you will have been told that it’s important to brush your teeth, to floss, to stay away from too much sugar, and to be careful how you chew. All of this will have been ingrained over time so that taking care of your teeth becomes a positive habit – or at least, that’s the idea. 

Have you ever stopped to wonder why your dental health is so important, though? It’s not just about having a great smile; there are other reasons why taking care of your teeth is crucial. Read on to find out what some of those reasons are, and this might motivate you to care for your teeth even more. 

Your Overall Physical Health 

What happens if you don’t brush your teeth properly or you don’t floss to remove tiny bits of food that can get trapped between your teeth? In some cases, you’ll lose your teeth because they’ll become rotten and no longer able to stay in your gums (or they’ll have to be removed because they are too damaged). However, even if it doesn’t get this far, you can still be doing a lot of damage to your health. 

When gums aren’t taken care of, they can become infected and inflamed. The bacteria causing the infection will then easily be able to get into your bloodstream and cause problems elsewhere, most notably and dangerously in your heart. It might come as a surprise to hear that good dental hygiene can promote good heart health, but it’s true. 

Your Mental Health 

Having good dental hygiene and taking care of your teeth and gums can improve your mental health because you will have more self-confidence and feel happier in general. The same is true the other way around; if you have poor dental hygiene and are missing teeth or your teeth are crooked or discoloured, many people find that their mental health is affected negatively – they might even become depressed about the way they look. 

Looking after your teeth is a great way to combat this problem, and if you have a problem that is making you feel bad about yourself, you can speak to experts at any time. It might be that when you close gaps in your teeth, you feel a lot better. 

Your Dental Health 

It should go without saying that if you take care of your teeth, you’ll have fewer dental health problems. This means you won’t have problems chewing or swallowing, and you won’t have to suffer with toothache, which can be truly debilitating. Not only is it painful, but it can cause distractions at work, and it can make it hard to sleep. 

It will also save you money. Although it’s still wise to visit your dentist once or twice a year, this will usually just be for a checkup if you are taking care of your teeth well between visits. If you’re not, it might be that expensive procedures have to be carried out, which could have been prevented with some extra care at home.
