preparing your home for autumn

PREPARING YOUR HOME FOR AUTUMN

Autumn is one of the best times of the year. Cosy might be one of the first words that spring to mind. You might also think of gorgeous, rich colours, warming drinks and gingerbread snacks. You might think of fabulous chunky knits and boots. Halloween and Christmas shopping might be other things to get excited about as the season gets underway. But it’s not all good. You might worry that your home will be cold, that your heating bill will rise and that your home won’t feel as lovely and cosy as you’d like it to. But, it can if you make a few changes and preparations.

Start at the Bottom

We so often neglect our floors when we make changes to our homes. But, they are the perfect place to start. Laminate flooring looks stylish any time of the year and is certainly easier to keep clean in the wintertime when everyone is walking mud and dirt into the house. But, adding thick high pile rugs to larger rooms, and next to your bed can make rooms feel warmer, and give you something warm and soft to step on when you first get out of bed. If you’ve got carpets, add rugs anyway, they’ll still make a huge difference.

Focus on Soft Furnishings

Rugs aren’t the only soft addition you should make to your home. Add cushions, throws and other soft furnishings to your sofa, bed and other areas to add texture, and give you options when it comes to keeping warm and comfortable. They’ll also give your rooms greater depth and create a more warming atmosphere.

Add Extra Lighting

Lighting options are another way to change the atmosphere and make things feel cosier. With extra lighting options, you can quickly change the mood and feeling in the room. Soft lighting can also make things look warmer, and being able to curl up with a good book, a blanket and the soft light of a reading lamp can be wonderful.

Access Your Window Seals

Unfortunately, your autumn preparations aren’t all about making changes to your decor and adding accessories. More important is keeping warm. Check your window seals to make sure they aren’t letting any cold air in, and arrange for repairs if needed.

Service Your Boiler

This is the perfect time of the year to have your boiler serviced. Chances are you haven’t used it much for the last few months, so even if it worked well last winter, you can’t be sure that it will this year. The last thing that you want is for the weather to turn and you have no heating or hot water. So, get it serviced now before it’s too late.

Check Your Pipes

Another thing that you don’t want is frozen pipes, which could then burst, which is why your autumn preparations should include checking your pipes, adding lagging where needed, repairing any dripping taps or leaks, and bleeding your radiators

Add Some Fun

Autumn is a fantastic time of year, and your home should reflect this. Add some autumn accessories and colours, and start making plans for holiday decorations.
