A BUDGET FAMILY ACTIVITY YOU PROBABLY HAVEN’T THOUGHT OF

Finding a budget family activity can be tricky, especially something that you haven’t already done.

Keeping the kids entertained can be so expensive at times so what if you have no money or you just don’t want to spend any this weekend, what do you do?

What if I told you, you could take the kids on an adventure that they will LOVE and it won’t cost you a penny, well apart from a little bit of petrol for the car.

A few weeks ago we woke up one Saturday morning with no plans of what to do.  It was definitely going to be a no spend weekend but we fancied doing something a bit different, other than the usual free activities.

Introducing ‘PARK TOUR’, well, this is what my seven year old called it.

What is it?

It’s a free day out in your local area visiting places you’ve probably not been to.  Bear with me why I try to explain it and read to the end so you get the whole picture.

How Does it Work?

You Google on your phone or computer “Local Recreation Ground”  then put in some of the local areas or villages.  Write down about 5-8 local recreation grounds with the postcodes, depending how long you want to be out and how much time you want to stay at each one.  We stayed 15 minutes to half an hour at each one to keep it interesting.

Ideally you want to list ones you’ve not visited before.

Plan it Out

Look at your list and work out roughly which ones to visit first and what route you are likely to take so that when you set out you know where to start.

Put the first postcode into your Sat Nav or Phone Map and set off for your first park.

When you arrive, the idea is that you are going on an ‘adventure’ to check out the local parks to see what fun play equipment each one has.

My son loved arriving at each new little play area that he’d never been to, to see what was there.  He ran around for 15-20 minutes, then I would say “time’s up” and we just jumped back in the car and headed to our next destination.

Obviously some of the play areas were better than others and some we spent longer at than others.

At the end we chose which we thought was our favourite one to visit again on another day.

The great thing about all of this is that we found some really great local play areas that we didn’t even know existed.

Other Essentials

Prepare a packed lunch/picnic so that you don’t need to spend anything on food and can stay out for a good few hours. Packing some special treats for the kids can also make the day out more exciting.

Don’t forget to take some photos so you can all look back at your day’s adventure!

We loved our ‘park tour’. It cost nothing and it was so exciting to see what we would find next.  I hope you enjoy your day as much as we enjoyed ours.
